Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dremel 761-03 Cordless Pet Nail Grooming Rotary ToolCustomer Review: Every small dog (or any pet) owner should have one. Summary: 4 Stars
I have a Toy Manchester Terrier (10 lbs.) and a Toy Fox Terrier (5 lbs.) that both HATE having their nails done.
I used to clip their nails using a high quality scissor style for the Manchester and a scissor style designed for cats on the little one. We do nails once a week and the clipping sessions were getting more and more stressful for everyone involved. Even though I was very careful to avoid their quick, the squeeze pressure of the clippers was enough to set them both screaming. I never wanted to take very much off the Manchester as she has thick black claws that make the quick very difficult to find and we were left with very uneven, ragged nails that scratched everyone around her.
I knew I had to try something else so decided to give this a try as the price is very inexpensive and my only regret has been not getting it sooner. Because the Dremel works its way up from the tip instead of hacking a big piece of nail off, you can see when you are getting close to the quick and stop filing. Even if you do go too far, it is such a small issue that my dogs don't seem to notice. I also love how you can file the tips to a nice smooth round shape that don't catch, split, or scratch anyone.
As far as the dogs go, they are still not a fan of pedicures, but the improvement for them is about 100%. Instead of them screaming and trying to get away, they just sit in my husbands arms until we are done. From what I can tell, there is no pain for them, the only issue is the strange sensation the Dremel causes. Any woman who has had acrylic nails knows how weird it feels to have your nails filed with a power sander. The vibrating feeling can be very odd. This can be mitigated by running the Dremel on low speed and finding an angle that causes the least amount of friction. My dogs became used to the whole experience very quickly by introducing them to it slowly and giving very tasty treats afterwards.
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the fact that it runs on batteries only. I would love to see a rechargable, or even A/C version. I run mine on high for both dogs, and by the time we are done, the batteries are done as well. Seeing as it takes 4 AAs, if you don't have rechargable batteries, this can get expensive very quickly. For this same reason, I wouldn't recommend this for any animal much larger than mine as you will probably have to change batteries after one or two paws. You would be much better served buying a regular Dremel for them.
This product is best for:
small animals (20 lbs. or less). I can see this being great for birds, cats, and pocket animals
a small number of animals, any more that a couple and you will need new batteries
Rechargable batteries. I can't stress this enough.
Description of Dremel 761-03 Cordless Pet Nail Grooming Rotary ToolIt's a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dog's nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it. Enter Dremel's cordless groomer, a quiet, battery-powered rotary tool that gently grinds down your pet's nails without cutting. We happen to know a particular hound named Sophie who's endured more than her share of cracked nails and bleeding nail beds, the result of the standard guillotine-type nail trimmers. Though she was a bit wary of the Dremel, she sniffed at it and decided it was harmless. Then we set it on the floor and turned it on.Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on.The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us. We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time. If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the ½-inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, it's a tail-wagger. Because it grinds nails rather than cutting them, this handy tool helps prevent bleeding nail beds, cracked nails, or nicks. At the same time, the 761-03 is quiet enough that its noise soothes rather than startles a nervous pup.
